Weekend Planner: Relay for Life, Shinefest begin

The Freeborn County Relay for Life event starts Friday evening at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. The fundraising goal is $127,000, with proceeds going toward cancer research, treatment and awareness of cancer prevention.

Opening ceremonies kick off at 6 p.m., and live entertainment starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 6 a.m. Saturday. There will be a kids carnival starting at 6 p.m., and luminarias will be lit at 9 p.m.

Food vendors include Jake’s Pizza, Bruno’s, Casa Zamora and more. Bingo will be held in the Veterans of Foreign Wars building from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Friday

• Help raise funds for Senior Resources by visiting the food stand at Nelson’s Market Place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• The Freeborn County Relay for Life at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds starts at 6 p.m.

• Enjoy a free movie, “Hatchi,” at Edgewater Park at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday

• Shinefest starts its week of service early with a roofing project at The Children’s Center in Albert Lea. People with and without roofing experience are needed to help, starting at 7 a.m. until the project is finished.

• Shinefest’s Community Sew Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Skyline Plaza in the Senior Center. Sewing kits and refreshments will be provided, but participants must bring a sewing machine, scissors and sack lunch. In 2010, hundreds of items were made for local and worldwide charities. • The Albert Lea Farmers Market starts at 9 a.m. and goes until noon in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.

• Go for a free swim at the Albert Lea Aquatic Center from 1 to 7 p.m. as part of the Sample Saturday Series.

Sunday

• The Albert Lea Fire Department Combat Squad will hold a four-person best shot golf tournament at Green Lea Golf Course starting at 8 a.m. Cost is $50 per person. Call 507-383-6704 for more information. There will be a special appearance by Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders selling swimsuit calendars.

• Ride on the Pelican Breeze II for a cruise narrated by Al Batt at 1:30 p.m. Call for reservations by Friday at 507-383-2630. Cost is $15.
