50 years ago — 1962

The Northwood basketball team remained undefeated in the North Iowa Conference at 11-0 with a 77-66 win over Garner. Northwood was led by Phil Johnson with 22 points, Mike Lien with 22 and Chuck Hendrickson with 14.

Lake Mills basketball defeated Osage 76-57 and raised their North Iowa record to 10-1. Al Holstad scored 27 points and Arlen Stensrud 14 for the Bulldogs.

The Albert Lea basketball team, behind 33 points by Lowell Syverson, defeated Winona 70-43.

Albert Lea graduate Jim Glesne scored 19 points for St. Olaf College in their 83-65 victory over Cornell in a Midwest Conference basketball game.

25 years ago — 1987

Competing in the American Drug Free Power Lifting Association for Minnesota State Championships at Mankato State University from Albert Lea were: Scott Brua, who took first place in the 181-pound Open Class and also received the Best Lifter Award, Kevin Brua, who placed third in the 148-pound Open Class and Kent Lestrud, who placed second in the Teenage Heavyweight Division.

The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team defeated Austin 58-40, and raised their Big Nine Conference record to 5-7 and their season record to 8-8. Heather Lang scored 14 points, and Julie Coughlin scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds for Albert Lea.

Albert Lea High School graduate Bill Ferrie is 27-4-1 overall and 12-0-1 in dual meets for the Nebraska Cornhuskers wrestling team. He was ranked 10th nationally at 150 pounds.

10 years ago — 2002

The Albert Lea boys’ swimming team defeated Farmington 96-85 for their eighth win in 10 dual meets. Sophomore Mitch Johnson won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle for the Tigers.

Lindsay Whalen scored 34 points for the 22nd-ranked Minnesota Gophers in their 99-83 win over Iowa.

The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team defeated Worthington 4-2 in a first-round game in Section 1A. Laura Hillman scored three goals and Jasey Porter one for Albert Lea. Albert Lea advanced to the semi-final round with a 5-1 victory over Mankato West. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Laura Hillman, Tessa Christensen, Jasey Porter, Brittany Arendt and Amy Leach.
