OWATONNA — The Albert Lea Tigers’ cross country team headed to Owatonna on Thursday for a 12-team meet. Other teams at the meet included: Owatonna, Hastings, Austin, Rochester Mayo, Rochester John Marshall, Winona, Mankato West, Rochester Century, Northfield, Rosemount and Zumbrota-Mazeppa.

The girls went first and saw Chrissy Monson lead for a little while until Austin’s Madison Overby took over. Overby ended up winning with teammate, Haley Splinter, coming in second. Winona’s Caitlin Domeyer took third, and Monson would finish in the fourth spot.

“Chrissy Monson was in fourth place,” said coach Jim Haney. “And then the rest of the girls, runners two through six, packed it up great.”

The girls won the meet with a total of 75 points. Closely behind them was Rosemount with 80 points.

“Absolutely amazing effort,” Haney said. “I’m proud of how they packed up. I couldn’t have asked for any more from them. That sets us up for the Big Nine, right where we want to be.”

The boys were up next. The team was led early by Blair Bonnerup until he was passed up by senior, Luc Malimanek. The boys’ individual portion, which saw the top three separate from the pack, was won by Zack Benning of Hastings, with Hunter Bailey of Winona in second and Trevor Capra of Rosemount taking third.

“My boys did a beautiful job again of staying close together,” said Haney. “They are improving each and every practice, to reaching their personal and team goals. They are amazing kids, all of them, and I am so very proud to have a chance to work with them.”

The boys’ team finished in ninth place out of the 12 teams that were at the meet which was won by Owatonna.

“We should be one of the favorites on the girls’ side of the Big Nine, and on the boys’ side, we hope to finish in the top half,” said Haney.

Next up for the Tigers’ cross country team will be a meet at Austin on Tuesday.

The meet will start at 4:30 p.m.
