To Riverland girls’ basketball.

If you like basketball and haven’t seen this video, go to the Tribune’s website. Riverland Community College girls’ basketball player Victoria Larson heaved a last-second shot from three-quarters of the court away to win the team’s game against North Iowa Area Community College 65-54 on Wednesday. The home crowd went wild! The Blue Devils are now 3-0. The shot appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Thursday as No. 2 in the top-10-plays segment.

To Hartland city candidates.

It’s a shame when no one places their name on the ballot. The mayor and council races in Hartland had no candidates listed, which does little to assist the voters in the booth and doesn’t allow the people of Freeborn County in general find out who the leaders of Hartland will be come Jan. 1. Let’s hope this small town will stand up and do its civic duty in 2014 and file with the proper officials to get names on the ballot.

To challenger candidates who created contested races by running.

There were some candidates who threw their name in the hat even though they knew beating the incumbent would be an uphill battle. These candidates might not have won, but they do deserve kudos for stirring public debate and moving the democratic process along. It’s good to air the issues, and without challengers, that doesn’t happen.
