Legion total up from October

The American Legion campaign to reduce its debt has reached $35,857 from 214 donations. Funds donated to the campaign go to the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

The donations are sent to the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which as of Oct. 27 had a donation total of $32,362 from 189 donations. The club still needs to raise about $47,000 to battle these debts.

People wishing to donate should send a check to the foundation at 2580 Bridge Ave. with the annotation “Legion Mortgage and Debt Reduction.” The donations are tax-deductible.

The American Legion kicked off a fundraising campaign in February after the severity of its debt problems.

Last month, the American Legion and the Internal Revenue Service struck an agreement that allows the club to avoid $29,000 in penalties. It is now on track to pay the IRS $1,000 per month for about seven years.
