FARMINGTON — Almost 1,900 students at one Twin Cities high school are getting iPads, as part of a districtwide plan to give every student a tablet computer by the end of the school year.

The Farmington Area Public Schools district has 6,700 students. Students at Farmington High School were among the first of them to receive iPads.

The long-term goal is to provide iPads for every student. That would allow teachers to personalize instruction for everyone, from top performers to struggling students. It would also save money on textbooks and paper worksheets.

Students and parents must sign a loan agreement and also pay for insurance.

The program costs $3 million over four years in a lease deal with Apple.

Dozens of students and staff volunteered to help families through a 15-minute process of paying for insurance and setting up accounts to download applications.
