You Can Help

Here are some of the volunteer opportunities currently open in Freeborn County. If you can help with any of them or would like to volunteer for others, call Pat Stumme, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program director, at Senior Resources, 377-7433 also 800-642-1875.

Volunteer drivers: Ride Services of Freeborn County needs just one more driver. You select the schedule. Drivers are reimbursed for mileage and receive training as they assist senior residents getting to medical and other appointments. Please call Senior Resources at 377-7433 for additional information and to volunteer.

Bell ringers: You, too, can be a bell ringer for The Salvation Army kettles; it’s a two-hour shift at grocery stores or malls. Add your name to the schedule by calling the Salvation Army at 373-8776 or register online at dev.thesalarmy.org/community/albert-lea. To help answering holiday phone calls, doing the setup/distribution for their toy shop or Angel Tree call 373-8776. Toy shop dates are Dec. 17-18 and Dec. 20.

Tax aide: Looking ahead to 2013, the AARP tax aide needs three more people with modest computer skills who can help elderly and low- to moderate-income people complete and file their tax returns. Training from Bruce Owens is the third week in January. Volunteers are supervised in the Senior Resources office as they meet with individual appointments in February through April. If you can offer four hours per week this would be a great help to Freeborn County folk.

RSVP, a program of Senior Resources of Freeborn County, receives some funding through the United Way of Freeborn County, Minnesota Board on Aging and Corporation for National and Community Service.
