Michael Brodkorb was taken to Regions Hospital in critical condition after crashing on Interstate 35E Wednesday night. He was alone in the SUV. A state trooper smelled alcohol on Brodkorb’s breath.

Brodkorb was a communications aide to Senate Republicans. He was fired in 2011 after an affair with then-Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch. He is suing the state, alleging he was a victim of discrimination because of his gender.
