WELLS — The musical acts Stub Highway 253 and Spirit Driven are set to play St. Patrick’s Day in Wells as part of a fundraiser for the local food shelf.

The Wells Area Food Shelf has organized an event it calls An Evening of Music. It starts at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church, 320 Second Ave. SW. The price of admission is a donation to the food shelf, whether it is money or a nonperishable food item.

“We are having this event to raise awareness about hunger in our area and to let people know how they can help and who can be helped,” said Wells resident Julie Seedorf, one of the organizers.

She said food shelves in Wells and around the region always are in need.

The concert will be followed by a baked potato supper bar in the church hall. Stub Highway 253 gets its unusual name because many members resided in Bricelyn, where the route ends. The band now has some original members and some new members. The members, according to a news release, now come from Bricelyn, Blue Earth, Frost and Winnebago. There are 11 members.

They frequently appear in the region to sing at community celebrations, weddings, church services and fundraisers.

Spirit Driven is a singing ministry from People of Hope Lutheran Church in Rochester. The group has been together for 10 years and sings contemporary Christian music, gospel songs and old-time hymns.

The Wells Area Food Shelf has been around since 1983. It is open from 4 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 291 First St. SW. The nonprofit effort is in need of volunteers on Tuesdays to help lift heavy packages, pick up donations and make lists.

The Wells Area Food Shelf served 1,292 households in 2012, and 50,842 pounds of food were given out. In turn, 9,926 pounds of food were donated. Without the assistance of volunteers and the Channel One Regional Food Bank in Rochester, it would be more difficult to meet the need.
