WELLS — Wells Administrator Steve Bloom was terminated from his position this week after six months on the job.

The Wells City Council on Monday made the unanimous decision after a meeting to discuss the issue in closed session, said Mayor Ron Gaines.

Gaines said the termination came because of a job performance issue and was nothing criminal in nature.

Bloom was still a probationary employee after being offered the job in September. He had an annual salary of $60,000.

Gaines said the council had identified six areas where Bloom needed to improve a few months ago, but no progress had been made. He declined to give further details.

Bloom had nearly 25 years of experience in city and county government prior to his employment in Wells, according to the Faribault County Register. He also worked six years in education as a teacher.

At the time Bloom was hired, he said he liked open communication and being a team leader, according to the Register. He described himself as a person who “leads by example” and who does not manage like a dictator. Gaines said the council will begin looking for a new administrator after City Attorney David Frundt of Frundt & Johnson in Blue Earth returns from vacation.

Frundt was unavailable for further comment.
