Albert Lea varsity goes undefeated in first meet of season

The Albert Lea boys’ tennis team has yet to lose a set after sweeping New Prague 7-0 on Thursday.

“I was very pleased with the quality of tennis for our first match of the year, especially since we’ve had only two outdoor practices,” Albert Lea head coach Tom Dyrdal said.

Trevor Herfindahl started a positive trend for the Tigers by sweeping both games from his opponent to win the No.1 set.

Taylor Herfindal kept the momentum going by shutting out his opponent to win the set by a combined score of 12-0.

Darik Weigel won by a combined score of 12-2, and Cole Keyeski finished off the Trojans in three games.

Keyeski won the first game 7-5, lost the second game 7-6 and came through in the clutch with a 6-1 victory to preserve the match shutout.

The Tigers also won the junior varsity game 6-5.

Dyrdal said he was impressed with the sportsmanship his team showed.

“Our goal was to bring great effort and positive attitudes to the match today, and the guys certainly did that,” he said. “It was a fun match and a great way to start our season.
