MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota Board of Regents has approved an agreement in which Fairview Health Services would provide $90 million in financial support to the university’s medical school over a 10-year period.

The university’s vice president for health sciences, Dr. Aaron Friedman, says the revenue would help improve information technology systems that allow researchers to analyze large volumes of data for studies on health care quality and patient outcomes.

Fairview owns and operates the university’s teaching hospitals and last year made a $5 million payment to support the school’s academic health center. Previously, the health system’s financial performance wasn’t strong enough to provide the support. Critics say that has hurt the medical school.

The agreement also creates a new board of directors for the health center.
