Alumni of Lea College are planing a 40th anniversary reunion for this summer.

The dates are set for July 26 to 28. The reunion features a banquet at the American Legion Club in Albert Lea, a cruise on the Pelican Breeze II boat and a tour of the Freeborn County Historical Museum. Registration forms were sent in the mail to alumni.

Organizers Lee Bangert and Mary Anderson ask local alumni to contact them with feedback for further planning of the reunion. Bangert can be reached at 507-373-9173 or 507-383-5834 and Anderson at 507-369-5025.

Lea College existed in western Albert Lea from 1965 to 1973. The City Arena in the Lake Chapeau neighborhood is the most notable remnant from the institution. It used to be Lea College Fieldhouse. People also can find Christopherson Hall, a former dormitory that now is Lake Chapeau Condos. Another is a gathering place called the Barn, which became the possession of the Sons of Norway.

The college’s offices, however, were downtown, in the former Morlea Dairy building, now occupied by Southern Minnesota Legal Services.

The college closed in 1973 amid financial difficulty. Classmates held a 30th reunion in 2003, with about 200 in attendance.
