MONTGOMERY — Alcohol was a factor in a crash that killed four people last month in Le Sueur County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Both drivers involved in the crash near Montgomery on Sept. 27 had been drinking, the patrol said.

Investigators said the driver of the SUV that crossed the center line on Le Sueur County Road 26, Condon Hulgan, had a blood alcohol content of .214, more than twice the legal limit to operate a vehicle. The crash killed Hulgan, 51, and his stepdaughter, Mary Urtuzuastegui, 11, of Montgomery.

The driver of the other vehicle, Jeffery Miller, 22, of Le Center, had a blood alcohol content of .032, below the legal limit of .08. Miller and a passenger in his Mercedes, Travis Reak, 24, of Le Center, were killed. Miller’s brother, Mark Miller, 24, was injured in the crash, but survived.

The crash occurred several miles from where Hulgan and Urtuzuastegui lived.

The westbound SUV crossed the center line on a curve in the road prior to the head-on collision, the patrol’s report said.
