LA CROSSE, Wis. — Work has been temporarily halted near where a 19-year-old worker fell about 40 feet from the I-90 bridge.

The state’s project manager, Mark Anderson, said the site is the cofferdam at “pier two,” but work on the rest of the project is continuing.

Campbell Police Chief Tim Kelemen said the man, an Ames Construction worker, fell at about 9 a.m. Wednesday while installing concrete forms and was wearing a harness when rescuers reached him. He had life threatening injuries and underwent surgery.

Rhonda Burke, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Department of Labor, said the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate.

The state is constructing a new bridge over the Mississippi River near Dresbach to replace the current one.
