Freeborn County Genealogical Society

The Freeborn County Genealogical Society met at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Freeborn County Historical Museum. The program was given by Janet Hintermeister, Jean Pelikan, Pat Mulso and Vickie Storlie. It was on the group’s trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City the week before. A short video was shown on the Granite Mountain Vault were the original microfilms and data are stored for the Family History Library. The next meeting of the Genealogy Society was at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at the museum. The program was on “Attending On-Line Classes, It’s EZ” by Valarie Lair.

 

Freemond Madson Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary

The Freemond Madson Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary met Nov. 11 at the Legion Hall with President Frances Camerer presiding.

The meeting was held with the short form ritual.

Before the meeting, DeeAnn Berglund shared a story of life of a military wife. Very enjoyable.

The charter was draped for auxiliary sister Katherine Van Guilder. Bless her memory.

Karianne Hermanson, First District Auxiliary chaplain of Cannon Falls Auxiliary 4452 was present to inspect the secretary and treasurer books and the work of the auxiliary. She found all in good order.

Discussion was held on the Veterans Day morning activities at Southwest Middle School where auxiliary members had distributed Buddy Poppies to the students and others present. The post commander, Jim Hockinson, and the color guard had presented the colors and had a speaker, John E. Barron, speak relating to his service in the armed forces.

The next first district meeting will be at Sweet Summers Post 1642 in Waseca at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 7. Auxiliary sisters will meet at the Grace Lutheran Church garage at 300 E. Elm Ave. in Waseca. A noon lunch will be served at the post located at 113 E. Elm Ave. The cost is $5.

Each post and auxiliary is asked to bring a poppy display if possible. The display will be set up at the post home between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. so they can be judged.

Department Vice President Mildred Lauer will be the department representative. Auxiliary secretaries and treasurers will be recognized.

The next meeting will be Dec. 9 at the Legion Hall with a joint post and auxiliary potluck supper at 6 p.m. Bring a dish to pass.

The drawing was won by Marcia Petersen.

The group has red rose cancer pins for sale to support its cancer program.

 

Trinity Lutheran Church Women

The Trinity Lutheran Church women held their annual Thankoffering and Ingathering Dinner on Nov. 12 in Trinity Hall.

The welcome was given by Co-president Bev Jackson Cotter. She said, “Our blessings are received with thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for.”

The Rev. Marcia Hall gave the devotions and the group sang the Doxology for the table prayer. The dinner was catered by Conger Catering and was served by them.

After dinner, the group gathered the Thankoffering collections and mission circle offerings. Thankofferings are gifts from individuals for blessings. Thankofferings support the total ministries of the women of the ELCA with such things as the Gather magazines, Bible studies, stewardship, grants, scholarships and many more.

Jo Meyer presented the Bible study, “The Widow of Zarephath, a Trusting Follower,” taken from I Kings, Psalm 65 and Mark. Praying hands open to receive God’s providence with trust and Thanksgiving. The TLCW members participated by reading the Bible verses.

A short meeting was conducted by Erna Berthelsen, co-president. Copies of the treasurer’s report and the coffee program were on the dinner table.

The next meeting is Dec. 4. The Eunice Circle will serve at 2 p.m. The Albert Lea High School chorale will perform its Christmas concert at 3 p.m.

Sewing Day is Nov. 13. Joan Mattick, Trinity quilt coordinator, reported 121 quilts, 35 baby kits, 51 personal care kits and 74 school kits were sent to Lutheran World Relief in 2013. On Nov. 13, the quilters made baby quilts for the Salvation Army.

Hall installed the following officers for 2014: Co-presidents Bev Jackson Cotter and Barb Larson, Vice President Karen Nelson, Secretary LaVonne Eggers, Treasurer Nancy Jensen, Mission Community Secretary Phyllis Tavis, Mission Growth Secretary Janet Drews and Mission Action Secretary Virginia Plantage.

Marcia Petersen, the group’s devoted treasurer, did not seek another term. She has just completed 15 years of service as treasurer. Erna Berthelsen, the devoted co-president, did not seek another term. She has served many years of service in many different capacities in the Trinity Lutheran Church.

The mission circles will remain the same for the 2014 year. The meeting was closed with the Lord’s prayer.
