Savick voted for implement tax

I’m concerned that our new state Rep. Shannon Savick doesn’t understand her job and the legislative process — that, or she’s simply not honest.

Recently I sent Savick a letter asking if she voted in favor of the new sales tax on farm/commercial equipment repairs. This was an unvetted, unpopular provision sneaked into the final tax bill and passed in the dead of night.

What I got in response was a convoluted letter attempting to convince me she hadn’t voted for it. She pointed the finger at the Senate, but anyone who knows the legislative process understands it comes down to the final vote on the final bill.

So, I did a little research.

Turns out Savick was a yes vote on the final tax bill (House File 677). I even looked into the floor debate. The author of the tax bill confirmed that this new, costly sales tax was in it. I’m assuming Savick was present for this debate.

Since the bill was passed in haste, I’m guessing Savick, like other yes votes, did not have a chance to talk to local farmers or implement dealers about the effects of this bill — or the $2 billion in other new and expanded taxes contained in it.

Either Savick doesn’t understand how bills are made into law or she’s trying to skirt the issue. If she’s trying to hide the truth, she’s admitting to a bad vote. We deserve better.

I’m disappointed in our new state representative. We need someone who is honest and works to represent our area’s best interests, not someone who votes in lockstep with Minneapolis/St. Paul Democrats.
