A season for treats

NEW RICHLAND — ’Tis the season to eat a lot of delicious baked goods, and Tam’s Treats & Treasures has New Richland covered.

Tammy Bogue has been in business on Southeast Second Street in New Richland for a little more than one year.

“I’ve worked in bakeries most of my adult life on and off,” she said. “And I just decided that I enjoy this and I must be good at it. People enjoy my baking and the things that I design, so I had nights off from my computer job and I decided to devote my time and energy to try and get it off the ground.”

Bogue does remote processing for a telecom company out of Florida. She recently got called back to the job after some time away.

“I get up in the morning, and I work on the computer because I can do that from home,” Bogue said. “When I’m done with that, I just start prepping what I need to get done.”

Bogue specializes at baking cookies, bars, cupcakes, brownies and breads. She also does wedding cakes and birthday cakes. She enjoys experimenting with new baking techniques.

“I started baking as a stay-at-home mom, and my kids’ great grandmother was the lady to go to in Emmons for wedding cakes and birthday cakes,” Bogue said. “She kind of took me by the hand and showed me a little bit, way back when.”

Bogue said business has been good since going into business, mainly because of social media and the Internet in general. Her Facebook page — facebook.com/TamsTreatsAndTreasures — has more than 200 likes.

“Word of mouth and then being able to post on Facebook has really helped me out,” she said. “If I do a post on one of the buy-and-sell sites and Facebook, I can pick up one or two orders a day.”

The holidays have kept Bogue busy this year with all the usual baking of cookies and bars. She also made a cake for a wedding happening on Saturday. To go along with selling her baked goods, she donates to local bake sale fundraisers.

“I keep an eye out for things like that just so I can help with the community too,” Bogue said.
