Victory hinged on two shots from the free-throw line Saturday for the Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team.

With 30 seconds left, Madelia led 62-63 and had a chance to extend its lead with two shots from the charity stripe. Madelia missed both attempts.

The clock ran down to 3 seconds when Glenville-Emmons’ Aaron Dempewolf was fouled on a shot attempt, said Wolverines head coach Jared Matson.

Dempewolf made both free throws, and Madelia’s last-second heave fell short at the buzzer.

The Wolverines won 64-63.

Matson said his team had a season-high 21 assists and played well against Madelia’s zone defense.

The Wolverines shot better than 50 percent from the field and hit six 3-pointers.

Derek Van Ryswyk hit five shots from long range and finished with a double-double: 18 points, 12 rebounds, one assist, two steals and three blocks.

Gavin Allison led the Wolverines offense with 23 points. The win snapped Glenville-Emmons’ three-game losing streak.

The Wolverines (6-11 overall, 3-8 Southeast Conference) are fourth in conference’s West Division standings.

Glenville-Emmons will play next at 7:30 p.m. today at Le Roy-Ostrander. The Cardinals have only won one game this year.
