USC girls defeat Alden-Conger

The United South Central girls’ basketball team beat Alden-Conger Thursday with a balanced offensive attack.

The Rebels led 25-18 at halftime and extended their advantage in the second half to win 62-40.

USC freshman forward Shianne Robertson scored a game-high 19 points, and Anissa Janzig added 12 more points in the paint. USC’s backcourt was also productive: Guards Taylor Schultz and Tara Bauman combined with 23 points and nine assists.

“It was the first night this year that we’ve had four girls in double figures,” said USC head coach Stu Hendrickson. “They couldn’t focus on any one player.”

Two players from Alden-Conger average double figures in scoring. Liesel Theusch averages 13.8 points per game, and Karina Skov averages 10.6. The duo was held to nine points combined. However, the Knights had a solid offensive performance from Cassie Gilster, who led Alden-Conger’s offense with 15 points. She scored 8.7 points more than her season average.

USC (13-4 overall, 6-3 Gopher Conference) won its second straight game after losing at home against NRHEG. The Rebels are third in the conference standings. Next, USC will host Waterville-Elysian-Morristown at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Alden-Conger (8-9 overall, 5-4 Valley Conference) lost its fifth straight outing. Two of those losses were by three points or fewer. Next, the Knights will play at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Valley Conference tournament at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman.
