50 years ago: 1964

• Tom Olson scored 20 points for Albert Lea in its 50-33 basketball win over Minneapolis Patrick Henry.

• In Albert Lea City Bantam League Hockey, Northside defeated Morin 5-1 behind John Morley’s three goals to win the league title. Bruce Westrum scored four goals for Academy in its 8-0 win over Hayward.

• Paul Yost scored 24 points, Larry Rasmussen, 21, and Gary Iverson, 20, for Emmons in its 85-82 win over Freeborn. Rick Bishop led all scorers with 36 points for Freeborn.

• Bricelyn defeated Delavan 57-53 in a Border League basketball game. Tom Lund scored 19 points, Bob Leland, 12, and John Risius, 11.

 25 years ago: 1989

• It was announced that Albert Lea graduate Chuck Jean would be inducted into the David Bartelma Wrestling Hall of Fame. He placed third at the Minnesota State Meet in 1966 and was a champion in 1967. He won NCAA national titles at 177 pounds in 1968 and 1970 and 2 NAIA championships in 1971 and 1972.

• The South Central girls’ basketball team won the Border League title with an 11-0 record after defeating Ceylon 83-60. Laura Berkeland scored 27 points, Jodi Stallkamp, 16, Kirsten Hugdahl, 14, and Jessica Hill, 12, for South Central.

• Scott Peterson and Max Jeffrey each scored 10 points to lead the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team to a 40-37 win over Faribault.

• The Northwood-Kensett boys’ basketball team defeated Britt 81-52 and raised its North Iowa Conference record to 12-1 and its overall mark to 15-2. Jim Geistler led Northwood-Kensett with 19 points.

10 years ago: 2004

• The Albert Lea wrestling team, ranked third in Class AAA, won the Big Nine Conference title after defeating Rochester Mayo 28-27. Winning matches for the Tigers were Zach Hansen, Beau Hansen, Adam Elseth, Brandon Klukow, Randy Larson and Chris Hable.

• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team defeated Winona 81-77 and raised its Big Nine Conference record to 9-4. Ben Woodside scored 35 points; Parker Skophammer and Ryan Moore scored 13 points each.
