Why a tax break for responders?

Rep. Shannon Savick’s recent column says firefighters, emergency medical technicians and volunteer first responders deserve a tax credit in Minnesota. While there is no argument that they play a critical role in our communities, where does it stop?

How about rolling back all the egregious tax increases the DFL just enacted on all Minnesotan’s as a first step? How about controlling spending, eliminating failed programs like MNsure, and establishing some common sense spending priorities in Minnesota?

We could all come up with a individuals who would like a tax credit. How about doctors, pharmacists, dentists, lawyers who provide pro bono work, those volunteering in nursing homes, battered women, Humane Societies and law enforcement — it isn’t as if local communities do not provide benefits to those that Rep. Savick mentions in her bill? How about the tax credit that teachers used to get? How about those working on Habitat for Humanity homes? How about volunteer clergy, tutors and endless others that benefit our communities, some paid, some not paid, some receive benefits, some do not.

Why is it every time you turn around the DFL has another plan of picking winners and losers, a hand out a credit here, or some grandiose scheme to benefit some at the costs of others?  Many EMTs, first responders and firefighters are part of volunteer organizations that pay for their work and provide other incentives toward retirement.

Every time you look its more spending here, more programs there, more government here, more regulation there. Enough! Savick and the DFL don’t get it; people want less government and lower taxes for everyone not just who they decide to pick in a game of winner versus loser!
