MARQUETTE, Mich. — The U.S. Coast Guard says ice as thick as 6 feet on Lake Superior will keep its icebreakers from reaching Marquette Harbor for some days.

Mark Dobson of the Coast Guard’s office in Sault Ste. Marie said that Marquette is not even on its “radar” at the moment as its cutters struggle to break the lake’s ice.

The newspaper says Lake Superior has the thickest ice in decades. The Great Lakes have had one of the heaviest ice covers ever reported.

The Coast Guard says the cutters Katmai Bay and Alder were breaking ice in Taconite Bay, Minn., then continuing north to Thunder Bay, Ontario. It says the cutter Mackinaw was working to lead two ships along the Canadian shoreline toward the Soo Locks.
