Bruins qualify for Robertson Cup finals with win

The Austin Bruins pulled off another franchise first when they earned their first trip to the Robertson Cup Finals after they beat the Topeka Roadrunners 4-3 in overtime in Game 3 of the Robertson Cup semifinals in Topeka Sunday night.

Drew Anderson, who is from Rochester, scored the game-winning and series clinching goal just 2:07 into overtime to give Austin the win. The Bruins had led 3-2 late in regulation, but Topeka’s Tyler Poulson scored a power play goal to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:27 left in regulation.

Nick Lehr had 29 saves in the win for Austin, which will now play at Fairbanks Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the NAHL title on the line.

In Game 2, the Bruins survived a wild third period that saw a total of four goals scored. Casey Jerry put Austin up 4-2 with a third period goal and Joe Schuldt made it 5-3 Bruins with 9:22 left in the game.

The Bruins won the game 6-4.
