Kiester Days to have old favorites with new twist

Kiester Days will feature events with a new twist along with some old favorites.

Changes to the four-day celebration from Thursday to Saturday are a new theme for the animal exhibit and a new format for the auto show.

Instead of a petting zoo, organizers opted to hire the Reptile and Amphibian Discovery Zoo from Owatonna with snakes, turtles and crocodiles from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The car and motorcycle shows were separate last year, but they’ve been combined into one event this year on Friday.

Gloria Pederson, secretary of the Kiester Civic and Commerce and organizer of the event, said her favorite parts of Kiester Days are the parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday and an event at 5 p.m. Friday called cow chip bingo.

“There’s a lot on the south end of Main Street with a fence around it,” Pederson said. “100 squares are drawn up, and then we release a cow. Wherever the cow puts a pie, that’s the winner. People buy tickets to win prizes.”

Kiester Days will start at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with an art, craft, hobby and collections show and sale. A celebration picnic will follow at 5 p.m., and Stephanie Erdman will perform at Kee Civic Theatre at 7:30 p.m.

Along with the car and motorcycle show and cow chip bingo, Friday will have a 5K run or walk that will start west of the Legion at 7 p.m.

Saturday will be the most event-packed day. It will start with a coed volleyball tournament and a horseshoe tournament at the city park. Both tourneys start at 9 a.m. After the reptile zoo, there will be a cribbage tournament at the Legion at 1 p.m. Penny Family will perform at the Kee Theatre at  2 p.m., and a beanbag tournament will start at 5 p.m. at Berma’s.

Two musical groups will play simultaneously at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The Afterwhile will perform at the street dance, and the All BS band will play at Berma’s.

The event will wrap up Sunday with a pancake breakfast and a worship service at Kee Civic Theatre at 9 a.m.
