50 years ago: 1964

• Satchel Paige, 58 years old, pitched the first three innings, giving up one hit, for the Kansas City Monarchs in its 13-2 exhibition baseball game victory against the Albert Lea Colonels.

• In the first round of the Church League National Division playoffs, Grace Lutheran was eliminated by St. Theodores 3-0 with a no-hitter by Bob Weber.

• Bruce Olson had two hits to lead Hayward to a 10-3 win over Our Savior’s in an American Division elimination game.

• Results in the City Slowpitch League included the following: Paul Pearson hit two home runs, and Jerry Olson had three hits for the Melody Bar in its 23-10 victory over Interstate. The Elbow Room defeated the Tribune 13-3 with Lanny Bachtle as the winning pitcher. Jack Lehmann and George Goskeson homered for the Elbow Room. The Eagles were defeated by Scotsman 12-4. Dude Helgeson was the winning pitcher, and Bob Utter was 4-for-4 at the plate for Scotsman. Jim Malepsy and Bill Malepsy each hit home runs, and Dave Elvebak had three hits for Albert Lea Federal in its 12-6 win against Clarks Grove.

 

25 years ago: 1989

• In the first game of the double-elimination district Legion baseball tournament, Glenville-Emmons lost to Plainview 2-0. Tim Kral pitched for Glenville-Emmons.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• The Albert Lea Elks U13 boys’ soccer team defeated Edina 3-0 to win the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association Chevy Cup State Tournament Classic 3 Division. Adam Kermes, Jairo Campos and Tyler Prihoda scored goals. Team members included Kermes, Campos, Prihoda, Cody Knudsen, Chris Karge, Grant Stadheim, Marco Rodriguez, Felipe Beccerra, Jared Jensen, Matt Tiegs, Julio Ambriz, John Hildreth, Adam Clark, Lucas Dang, Jordan DeVries, Andy Harte and Levi Herrera. Dave Squires was the head coach.

• Glenville-Emmons lost its second-round game in the Legion Subdistrict baseball tournament 7-2 to Stewartville. Glenville-Emmons won its third-round game 9-2 over New Richland. Josh Kluender hit a two-run home run, and Alex Hansen and Devin Kaasa each had two hits. Glenville-Emmons was eliminated with a 4-2 loss against Kasson in the fourth round.
