Weekend Planner: Sports and arts join in new Albert Lea festival

The Festival of Sports & Arts will take over Edgewater Park’s pavilion from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday as a fundraiser for the Albert Lea Art Center.

There will be a number of things happening, including art exhibitions, beer tastings, helicopter rides, live music and children’s activities, to name a few.

General admission is free for the festival, and punch tickets for the beer tastings can be purchased for $25 at the door or $20 ahead of time. A commemorative mug comes with each ticket purchase.

Food options include tacos, hamburgers, brats and hot dogs, and attendees can vote for their favorite griller. Participants in the grilling are Jordan DeVries, Dale Grotsun, Gary Schindler, John Schulte and Ray Talamantes.

Thirty to 40 art vendors will be at the festival exhibiting different mediums such as acrylics, chalk, jewelry, photography, rug weaving, sculpture, stained glass, watercolors, oils, pastels, rock creatures, soaps and wood.

Sports exhibitors include the Bayside Skiers, DLF Custom Fishing Rods, a fly tying exhibition by Patrick Fryer and archery with Hart Brothers Weaponry.

The musical acts Armbands and 3 Wheels and A-Flat will perform.

Children’s activities include a bounce house, bracelet making, canoeing and kayaking, face painting and relay races, among others.

 

Friday

• The Red Cross is hosting a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave.

• The “Envision the Impressionist” art display will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• The Big Island Bar-B-Que will be from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds, 1031 Bridge Ave.

• There will be a Pelican Breeze II pizza cruise leaving the dock in Frank Hall Park at 6 p.m. Reservations need to be made by 4 p.m. Friday and the cost is $20. Call 383-7273 to make reservations.

• The Alden Boy Scouts will be having a burger feed from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Alden American Legion, 151 N. Broadway, Alden.

• The Eagles Club will have an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the club, 205 W. William St., with entertainment by Full House.

• The Albert Lea Moose Lodge No. 1703 will have a prime rib, steak, chicken, shrimp and all-you-can-eat fish fry at the lodge, 1623 W. Main St. in Skyline Plaza. The cost is $10 and entertainment will be provided by RAHK Karaoke.

• National Theatre in HD will present “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” at 7 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway Ave.

 

Saturday

• Full Draw Archery Club presents a 3D tournament upstairs in the Knutson Building from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 131 S. Newton Ave.

• Find some fresh produce, baked goods and more at the Albert Lea Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to noon at the Northbridge Mall parking lot, 2510 Bridge Ave.

• Albert Lea U-12 girls hockey will have a car wash and hot dog stand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Hy-Vee parking lot, 2708 Bridge Ave.

• The “Envision the Impressionist” art display will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• The Big Island Bar-B-Que continues from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds, 1031 Bridge Ave.

• There will be a salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. by the Silver Lake Women of the ELCA at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, 705 Silver Lake Road, Northwood.

• Children’s games will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Fairlane Building at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds, 1031 Bridge Ave.

• Albert Lea Floats will celebrate Albert Lea’s new boat launch from noon to 6 p.m. at Frank Hall Park. The Lakes Foundation will be celebrating with Anheuser Busch for being selected as the best lake in Minnesota. The festival is open to the public, and there will be free use of kayaks, canoes and paddle boards, and attendees are welcome to bring their own non motorized floating vessels. Food, music and other events will be going on, including helicopter rides, beer sampling tents and pickleball.

• The Eagles Club will have a sweet corn feed and birthday supper from noon to 2 p.m. and will serve cornish game hen at the club, 205 W. William St. Entertainment will be provided by Sounds of RAHK.

• The 11th Annual All Veterans All Eras Family BBQ starts serving at 1 p.m. in the Shelter House at the Northwood Fairgrounds. Burgers, brats and sloppy joes will be served.

• The Albert Lea Hockey Open will be from 1 to 9 p.m. at Green Lea Golf Course, 101 E. Richway Drive. The golf event is full, but those interested can join at 5:30 p.m. for a raffle, live auction and dinner. The event helps support youth hockey.

• The Pelican Breeze II will go on a cruise to watch all of the Albert Lea Floats action with Al Batt. The boat will leave the Frank Hall Park dock at 1:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended and the cost is $15. Call 383-7273 to reserve a seat.

• A regular 90-minute Pelican Breeze II cruise will leave Frank Hall Park at 4 p.m.. The cost is $10 and no reservations are needed.

• National Theatre in HD will present “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” at 7 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway Ave.

• There will be karaoke at the Alden American Legion club, 151 N. Broadway, Alden, from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Dollar jello injectors all night.

 

Sunday

• The Albert Lea American Legion Club will have Sunday breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 142 N. Broadway. Pancakes, sausages, potatoes, scrambled eggs with or without ham, fruit cups, juice, milk and coffee will be served. The breakfast is $7, with $1 going to the youth group for your church of choice.

• The Wedgewood Cove and Mrs. Gerry’s Couples Invitational is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club, 2200 W. Ninth St.

• The “Envision the Impressionist” art display will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• The Eagles Club Family Picnic will be from noon to 4 p.m. in Emmons. Lunch will be served between noon and 2 p.m.

• There will be a Pelican Breeze II public cruise leaving at 1:15 p.m. from the dock in Frank Hall Park. The cost is $10.
