AUSTIN — Police are investigating what they believe was a shooting at a southeast Austin residence Tuesday evening.

Austin Police Department Capt. Dave McKichan said one person was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin with what he said was a gunshot wound.

The incident took place at around 6 p.m. at Whittier Place Townhomes, 414 Fourth St. SE.

A witness heard gunshots before police arrived.

“I said, ‘That was gunfire, wasn’t it?’” the witness said.

Not long after the initial incident, a male subject was taken into custody on Eighth Street Northeast and then the medical center was placed on lockdown. However, police would not confirm if the two incidents were related.

The hospital, which was locked down for more than an hour, opened again at about 7:30 p.m.

McKichan said Austin police were continuing the investigation with help from the Mower County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

“This is a fluid and ongoing investigation,” McKichan said.

McKichan said if anybody has any further information involving the case to call 507-437-9400.
