Next sheriff seeks level Kindler had his 1st year

Freeborn County’s elected officials submitted their salary requests for 2015 to the county commissioners during two workshops in the last week.

County Administrator John Kluever said Freeborn County Sheriff-elect Kurt Freitag  requested $75,000 for his first year in office, which is the same amount Freeborn County Sheriff Bob Kindler received in 2011 during his first year as sheriff.

Other salary requests were as follows:

$65,000 for County Recorder Kelly Callahan,  who received $60,025 this year.

$70,500 for Auditor-Treasurer Pat Martinson, who received $64,320 this year.

Kluever said County Attorney Craig Nelson did not submit a specific dollar request. His present salary is $98,736.

There also was minimal discussion about the county commissioners’ salary, which is $22,674, he said. The commissioner salary has been the same for at least three years.

Kluever said each of the officials talked about their experience with the county, what they have brought to the office and what they plan to bring in the future.

The commissioners likely will vote on the salaries Tuesday.
