An Albert Lea school bus carrying nine children was struck by a semi Tuesday after classes on South Newton Avenue.

No children were hurt, said Albert Lea Area School Director of Facilities Steve Anderson.

The trucker, 50-year-old Stephane Yargeau of Canada, drove off after striking the bus on the driver’s side rear corner, according to the police report. The man’s specific city of residence was unavailable.

The report said Yargeau was unaware his semi had hit the bus. The police report was unfinished as of press time and more details, such as the trucking company and make and model of the semi, will be printed in the Thursday issue.

The bus, No. 345, was hauling the children from Lakeview Elementary School to The Children’s Center, Anderson said. It was driven by Orin Calhoun, 66, who reported the collision to authorities and met with a police officer at The Children’s Center, where the children safely exited the bus.

Anderson said Albert Lea Bus Co. takes care of repairing the buses and noted that buses in crashes, even in minor ones, cannot return to service until they have been re-inspected by the Minnesota State Patrol.
