50 years ago: 1964

• More than a dozen area players were named to the Border Conference All-Star football team: from Kiester were Steve Scherb, Larry Sundsvold and Larry Roalstad; from Freeborn were Dick McKean, Jack Anderson and Al Jensen; from Alden were Bob Hoeg, George Purdy, Frank Steele, Dave Sorenson and Greg Hitchcock; from Bricelyn were Marvin Reinartz and John Rislus; from Emmons was John Lair.

• The Albert Lea football team lost its last game of the year 13-12 to the Winona Winhawks. Dave Mueller gained 62 yards, Doyle Freemyer had 44 yards and Steve Jerdee had 41 yards. The Tigers finished the season with a 3-6 record.

• The Wells Wildcats defeated Windom 14-7 to finish the regular season with an 8-1 record. Scoring touchdowns for Wells were Larry Sonnek and Larry Kuster.

 

25 years ago: 1989

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference boys’ cross country team were Jon Edson and Toby Figueroa. Allan Dittrich and Todd Williamschen received All-Conference honorable mention. Jenna Seul and Amy Stay were named to the Big Nine All-Conference girls’ cross country team, and Robin Heyes received All-Conference honorable mention.

• The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Northfield 3-0 by scores of 15-13, 15-9 and 15-13. Jill Johnson had 6 ace hits
for Albert Lea.

• Alden-Conger-Freeborn defeated Hayfield 3-2 and won the district volleyball title. Darcy Evenson was 30-of-31 and Jenny Stenzel 17-of-17 serving.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference girls’ soccer team from Albert Lea were senior Tessa Christensen and sophomore Kendra Olchefske. Receiving All-Conference honorable mention was sophomore Jenny Birkhofer.

• The Oakland Athletics team won the 2004 Albert Lea Park and Recreation pee wee softball title. Team members were Devan Miller, Erin Miller, Brittany Meuser, Emily Stark, Maria Schoepf, Jenna Stene, Jessica Kalis, Courtney Schnaith, Rachel Friedman, Olivia Hedum, Sara Remakel and Kim Nelson. Coaches were Jeff Miller and John Kalis.

• In the first round of Iowa’s Class 1A state football playoffs, Northwood-Kensett defeated Postville 28-0. Eric Parker rushed for 124 yards on eight carries, and Kelvin Hendrickson led the defense with 21 tackles for the Vikings.
