50 years ago: 1964

• The Albert Lea wrestling team won its first six matches on its way to a 27-15 win over Winona. Winners for the Tigers were Mark Allen at 95 pounds, John Demo at 103, Bob Hatch at 112, Ken Stauch at 120, Mike Malepsy at 127, Gary Neist at 133 and Ken Stencel at 145.

• Wells High School won its third straight basketball game with a 52-46 against New Richland. Jeff Miller scored 16 points, Tom Colby, 17, Larry Sonneck and Pat Kelley, 10 each, for the Wildcats. Perry Haugen and Bruce Babcock scored 13 points each for New Richland.

• The Glenville boys’ basketball team won its first game of the year 52-39 over the Waseca Aggies. Dan Rodgers led Glenville with 22 points.

 

25 years ago: 1989

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference volleyball team was Albert Lea senior Jill Johnson and receiving All-Conference honorable mention were senior Jenni Ortgies and junior Pam Stoltz.

• Albert Lea graduate Korri Spiering, daughter Cornelius Spiering and his wife of Hollandale, received a varsity letter in soccer at Wartburg College.

• Lisa Sveen, a 5-foot-10-inch senior for the Glenville-Emmons basketball team, scored her 1,000th career point in a 50-45 victory over Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton. The win for Glenville-Emmons improved its season record to 5-0.

• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team handed Mankato East its first loss of the season 69-66. The Tigers were led by Pat Sullivan with 13 points, Jon Cluppert, 12, and Shane Arett, 11.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• The Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team raised its season record to 6-1 after defeating Kansas 62-45. Janel McCarville scored 15 points, Liz Podominck, 14, and Shannon Schonrock, 13, for the Gophers.

• Parker Skophammer scored 31 points for the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team in its first win of the season, 55-51 over Winona.

• The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team was victorious over Winona by a score of 64-48. Katherine Ladwig scored 16 points and had 8 rebounds, and Allison Arnold added 10 points for Albert Lea.
