Lake Mills placed sixth in the standings last year.

“It was a roller coaster of a day, but we have enough depth in our lineup to make up for some mishaps,” said Bulldogs coach Alex Brandenburg. “We had some very good things happen, but there were too many matches today where we had leads and got pinned.”

Five finalists led Lake Mills to the title. Sophomores Michael Olsen, and Slade Sifuentes put together strong outings to claim the title in their weight classes. Olsen scored a reversal in the waning seconds to win 6-5 against Dalton Nelson of North Butler, the No. 9 wrestler in Class 1A at 132 pounds, according to the Predicament. Nelson had beaten Olsen 12-2 just a week ago. Sifuentes, ranked No. 7 in 1A at 182, scored a 16-0 technical fall over No. 1-seed Jason Fisher of Nashua-Plainfield.

The Bulldogs’ three runners-up were Brady Schmidt, Spencer Jensen, and Andrew Olsen, No. 6 at 195 pounds.

“We had some individuals have great performances, and the squad picked up a ton of pins today,” Brandenburg said.
