ST. PAUL — Proponents of scrapping the state’s long-standing ban on Sunday liquor sales have one more shot this year.

The House was set to take up a bill this afternoon that makes more limited changes to the ban. It would allow craft brewers to sell 64-ounce growlers of beer on Sundays and let bars sell booze at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

But lawmakers could force the issue of a broader repeal with an amendment. A similar effort failed in the Senate earlier this month but it gave proponents hope. Eight senators switched to vote in favor of doing away with the ban.

Minnesota is one of just 12 states that still ban Sunday sales. Opponents say a seventh day of sales wouldn’t bring extra business to liquor stores.
