ALDEN — Although the Alden-Conger boys’ golf team lost its season opener, head coach Doug Johnson was pleased with his team’s combined score.

“We’ve had the same bunch of boys the last few years, and now they can break 200 on a regular basis,” he said. “We just need a few more meets behind us and more practice, and we’ll be a good team.”

Alden-Conger was 12 strokes under 200, but Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton defeated the Knights 178-188 Monday in the rain at Oak View Golf Club.

Par for the course is 36 strokes, and Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s Nathan Schmitz was the medalist with a score of 41.

Alden-Conger’s Jordan Hallman was the runner-up medalist with a 42. Also scoring for the Knights were Zach Anderson, 48; Eli Hallman, 50; and Ryan Hansen, 55.

“Jordan had a really good round tonight,” Johnson said. “With the cold weather and the kids being gone for a week on a band trip, overall we played well. I was proud of them.”

Both squads in the girls’ division had only two participants each and did not compete at the team level. Elynn Johnson led Alden-Conger by shooting a 52, and Sydney Chicos added a 69.

The girls’ team will look to improve on last year’s 4-12 record, while the boys’ team will do the same for its 13-21 record.

Johnson is in his fifth season leading the Knights.

Monday’s meet was the first of five coed meets the Knights will host at Oak View Golf Club. Alden-Conger will host LeRoy-Ostrander at 4:30 p.m. today, St. Clair at 4:30 p.m. April 13, Madelia at 4:30 p.m. April 23 and Granada-Huntley-East Chain at 4:30 p.m. May 7.
