50 years ago: 1965

• The Emmons Eagles baseball team greeted six letter winners for the start of practice: Al Rasmussen, John Lair, Lynn Yost, Gay Schewe, Ray Sorbo and David Lair.

• Albert Lea baseball coach Bill Christopherson started practice with nine returning letter winners: Dick Wayne, Jim Olson, Rick Swanson, John Hegland, Larry Petersen, Bruce Hebel, Bill Southerland, Steve Grotenhuis and Jim Bratvold.

• The Alden track and field team greeted seven returning letter winners including Bob Hoeg, George Purdy, Wayne Henshe, Mark Rasmussen, Frank Steele, Allen Schmidt and Duane Sauke.

• Gerald Bakken, head coach of the Glenville High School track and field team, had seven returning letter winners: Orval Quam, Paul Oakland, Lonnie Berven, Charles Anderson, Paul Buchanan, Dan Rodgers and Randy Studier.

 

25 years ago: 1990

• Waseca defeated the Albert Lea baseball team 10-6 in the first round of the Albert Lea Baseball Tournament. Scott Johnson led the Tigers with two hits, a walk and two stolen bases.

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference basketball team from Albert Lea was Jon Cluppert. Receiving All-Conference honorable mention for the Tigers were Matt Brand and Matt Guse.

• The Albert Lea boys’ golf team won a triangular with 309 strokes to Clear Lake’s 329 and Mason City’s 335. Scores for the Tigers were Steve Petersen, 74; Mike Oothoudt, 76; Todd Intihar, 79; and David Fligge, 80.

• In its season-opening baseball team game, Alden-Conger-Freeborn defeated Maple River 5-1. Winning pitcher Sophomore Dusty Jacobson had 11 strikeouts, and Paul Koziolek had two hits and two RBIs for Alden-Conger-Freeborn.

 

10 years ago: 2005

• The Glenville-Emmons softball team defeated Alden-Conger 4-2. Kendra Mathiason and Nicole Bute each had two hits for Alden-Conger.

• In its season opener, the Glenville-Emmons baseball team won 13-3 over Granada-Huntley- East Chain/Martin Luther. Dustin Rayman was 3-for-3, including a home run and three RBIs, and Nathan Cooper had three hits and three RBIs.
