50 years ago: 1965

• With Doyle Freemyer and Terry Gilbertson each scoring two touchdowns, the Albert Lea football team defeated Faribault 26-7.

• Austin won the Region 1 cross country meet, and Albert Lea finished fourth. Top finishers for the Tigers were Jerold Roth, 11th, and Brendon O’Brian, 20th.

• Named to the Associated Press Major League All-Star team were first baseman Willie McCovey, San Francisco Giants; second baseman Pete Rose, Cincinnati Reds; third baseman Brooks Robinson, Baltimore Orioles; shortstop Maury Wills, Los Angeles Dodgers; outfielder Willie Mays, Giants; outfielder Tony Oliva, Minnesota Twins; outfielder Hank Aaron, Milwaukee Brewers; catcher Joe Torre, Brewers; right-handed pitcher Juan Marichal, Giants; left-handed pitcher Sandy Koufax, Dodgers.

25 years ago: 1990

• The Albert Lea girls’ swimming team defeated Austin 110-84. Leah Mattson of the Tigers won the 200-yard freestyle, the 100 butterfly and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team with Jenni Polis, Steph Schultz and Kristi Strecker.

• The Albert Lea girls’ cross country team defeated Owatonna 33-25 and Austin 40-21 in a triangular. Finishes for the Tigers were Amy Stay, second; Jenna Seul, fourth; Kristi Edwin, sixth; Amy Nygaard, eighth; Bette Olvera, 10th; Jesse Polley, 11th; Rhonda Galkin, 14th; Michele Linder, 17th; Lisa Zeman, 19th; Kirsten Nowak, 22nd; and Amy Roozenboom, 28th.

• The Albert Lea boys’ soccer team compiled a 6-3-1 season. Team members were Todd Butts, Brandon Hanson, Tony Louters, Francisco Penning, Jamie Christensen, Lance Loverink, Erin Ladlie, Ben Prescott, Bruce Johnson, Pedro Olvera, Marky Guerra and Jeremy Helman.

10 years ago: 2005

• The Alden-Conger volleyball team defeated United South Central 3-1 by scores of 25-20, 26-24, 16-25 and 25-22. Dani Jensen was 18 for 18 serving, Kristen Faugstad had 11 kills and Vanessa Politz nine kills.

• In the Section 2A girls’ soccer tournament, Albert Lea won its first game 2-1 over Northfield and advanced to the section final for the first time in school history. Abbey Arends and Jenna Christensen scored goals for the Tigers. Albert Lea was defeated by Lakeville South 4-1 in the championship game. The Tigers finished the season with a 14-6 record.
