50 years ago: 1965

• Pat Phillips and Daryl Paulson both scored two touchdowns, and Butch Paulson added one more for the Ellendale High School football team in a 32-13 victory.

• Terry Gilbertson scored two touchdowns for the Albert Lea football team in its 16-6 win over Northfield. Brad Rinsem gained 75 yards rushing, and Doyle Freemyer added 65 more for the Tigers.

• Shortstop Zoilo Versalles hit a grand slam for the Minnesota Twins in their 7-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles. This win was No. 101 for the Twins in 1965.

25 years ago: 1990

• The Albert Lea girls’ cross country team defeated Mankato West 34-23 and lost to Rochester 38-17 in a triangular. Placing for the Tigers were Jenna Seul, fourth; Amy Nygaard, 8th; Amy Stay, 10th; Jessie Polley, 11th; Rhonda Galkin, 13th; Bette Olvera, 14th; and Lisa Zeman, 18th.

• Tiger City Sports won the men’s softball West Coast League. Team members were Van Munson, Ed Pomerson, Jim Jensen, Bruce Bednar, Doug Fink, Steve Enderson, Dean Mulso, Steve Munson, Len Carter and Troy Enderson.

• The Aragon 9 team won the 35-and-over Men’s Slow Pitch League. Team members included Larry Goodnature, Rod Tovar, Jim Godtland, Dale Haukoos, Byron Jensen, Steve Roche, Dean Dahl, Larry Sorenson, Roy Page, Bruce Schumacher, Randy Appel and Bob Kirch.

• The Albert Lea volleyball team shut out Rochester John Marshall 3-0 by scores of 15-12, 15-8 and 15-9. Tami Tufte had five ace hits and Jodi Bumpus added four.

10 years ago: 2005

• The Lake Mills volleyball team defeated Osage 3-1 by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-17 to win its third consecutive North Iowa Conference title.

• Amanda Arends scored two goals in the Albert Lea homecoming girls’ soccer 2-0 win over Rochester John Marshall.

• The Glenville-Emmons volleyball team improved its record to 6-7-1 after defeating Spring Grove 3-0 by scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 21-14. Jordan VanRyswyk had 10 kills, Ashley Lau and Chelsey Ziebell 6 kills each, and Jordan Claussen had 12 assists for the Wolverines.
