50 years ago: 1965

• The Albert Lea wrestling team opened its season with a 44-8 victory over White Bear Lake. Winning by fall for the Tigers were Chuck Nelson at 95 pounds; Bill Fynbo, 103; Mark Allen, 112; Mike Malepsy, 133; Dean Hoeve, 138; Ken Stencel, 145; and John Forman, heavyweight.

• Glenville opened its basketball season defeating Alden-Conger 65-61 in overtime. Dick Grinolds scored 19 points and Dan Rodgers, 15, for Glenville, and the Blackhawks were led by Mike Nelson with 20 points.

• The Albert Lea basketball team was victorious in its season opener by defeating Fairmont 69-59. The Tigers were led by Dan Doty with 23 points; Chuck Slette, 15; and Johnny Vollum, 15.

• Freeborn High School defeated Minnesota Lake 76-56 with balanced scoring. Clete Merrit scored 24 points; Don Marpe, 14; Tom Howser, 13; and Rich Honstad, 10, for Freeborn.

25 years ago: 1990 

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference volleyball team from Albert Lea were Pam Stoltz, Laura Bisek and Tina Boyer. Receiving All-Conference honorable mention was Tami Tufte.

• The Minnesota Gophers football team defeated Iowa 31-14 and finished in a four-way tie for the Big Ten Conference title. Iowa beat the other teams and moved on to the Rose Bowl. Mark Smith scored two touchdowns and rushed for 80 yards for the Gophers.

• The Pour Boys from Albert Lea finished runner up in Minnetonka in the Class C Minnesota state touch football tournament. Team members were Mark Indrelie, Terry Picha, Ken Peterson, Dewey Hanson, Al Johnson, Vern Frydenlund, Brian Bergone, Butch Bird, Brad Edwin, Gary Cherone, Jim Johnson and Jim Armstrong.

10 years ago: 2005

• Named the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area football Coach of the Year was Chad Mattson of Alden-Conger, and the Albert Lea All-Area football Player of the Year was Matt Hengesteg of Northwood-Kensett. Named to the First Team were Jarrod Knutson, Michael Greibrok and Justin Flattum from Glenville-Emmons; Ryan Wach and Matt Bremseth from Alden-Conger; Cory Berggrek and Ben Berhow from Albert Lea; Justin Kester from Lake Mills; Ryan Weisert and Matt Hengesteg from Northwood-Kensett; and Mitch Brekke from NRHEG.
