The Nice Advice, By Leah Albert

Hello Albert Lea!

I am writing in from my hometown, enjoying the long weekend with family and old friends.

Last night, after the house cleared out of excited children and tired parents, the dishes washed and put away, I found myself reflecting on the spirit of the season. For me, gratitude is the heart of the holiday season, and I find it fitting we kick it off with a day dedicated to giving thanks.

And after all of that gratitude, we go out and find ways to show those we love that we appreciate them. This can be a special store-bought gift, a hug or a tasty homemade treat. It could be a smile or a hand-crafted ornament for the tree.

What other ways can we express gratitude? Are there other things in life we can appreciate and honor besides family and friends? What about our neighbors? Parks? Programs?

Our community is an amazing place to live and work. In the spirit of the season, I encourage you to dig a little deeper. Look around you with fresh eyes. What do you see?

I see opportunity. Opportunity to support our local businesses and stimulate our local economy. I see opportunity to be of service to others. Whether it’s volunteering, donating to a cause near and dear to your heart or simply holding the door with a smile for the person walking in behind you, you are creating a sense of community and showing others you care.

Because one thing’s for certain: The spirit of the season isn’t about any one person or any one thing. It’s about all of us.

I wish you and yours the very best in the coming weeks. And I hope the spirit of the season becomes something you carry with you all year long.

Thank you, Albert Lea! Happy holidays!

Sincerely,

Leah
