Albert Lea basketball edged Faribault 50 years ago

50 years ago: 1966

In high school gymnastics Albert Lea High School defeated White Bear Lake 57-48. Roger Neist placed first in the free exercise, high bar, parallel bar, rings and tumbling for the Tigers.

Chuck Slette hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining in an ALHS basketball victory over Faribault 56-55. Dan Doty scored 30 points for the Tigers.

Dick Grinolds scored 30 points and Danny Rodgers 20 for the Glenville Trojans in their 74-69 win over Waseca.

In Gopher Conference basketball Ellendale defeated Waterville 84-55. Daryl Paulsen scored 24 points and Tom Broskoff 13 for the Raiders.

 

25 years ago: 1991

Jon Cluppert scored 19 points and had 16 rebounds in the ALHS boys’ basketball team’s 62-47 win over ninth-ranked Blue Earth. Paul Bisek had 12 points and Chris Boysen 10 for the Tigers.

The NRHEG wrestling team improved to 4-0 in the Gopher Conference after defeating Blooming Prairie 49-12. Winning by pins for the Panthers were Cory Klemmenson at 119, Jeff Seltun at 135 and Travis Routh at 145.

Ryan Charlson hit a free throw with one second left in the game for Lake Mills in their one point win over Osage 61-60. Josh Heagel had 24 points and Jeremy Vaught 15 for the Bulldogs. Lake Mills raised their season record to 8-2 and their North Iowa Conference mark to 4-2.

Alden-Conger-Freeborn, with Kirk Peterson scoring 30 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, defeated Glenville-Emmons 98-80.

 

10 years ago: 2006

The ALHS boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both defeated Austin. In the girls’ game Liz Thompson hit two free throws with one second remaining in their 42-40 win. Hali Hendrickson had 12 points for ALHS. Parker Skophammer scored 16 points, A.J. Kortz 14, Greg Peterson 13 and Mike Polis 12 for the boys in their 67-48 victory over the Packers.

Charlie Rognes  scored 14 points, Tyler Brackey 13 and Cole Christianson 12 to lead the Lake Mills basketball team to a 56-54 win over G-E. The Wolverines were led by Devin Yost with 16 points and Seth Buchanan with 14.
