Weekend Planner: Activities abound for all ages at 7th annual The Big Freeze

Albert Lea’s seventh annual winter festival known as The Big Freeze will take place this weekend at Edgewater Park.

Events kicked off Monday with the start of the Medallion Hunt. All of the other events will take place Saturday.

The following is a rundown of activities:

• The Big Freeze Ice Bowl disc golf tournament will be at 10 a.m. starting at the Edgewater Bay pavilion. Registration is from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Tournament includes two rounds of 18 holes at Bancroft Bay Park. There will be cash prizes for the top 10 players. Event fee is five nonperishable food items.

• A snowshoe shuffle will start at 11 a.m. at the Edgewater pavilion. Snowshoes will be available for $5. Shuffle is for 2 1/2 miles.

• Snowmobile radar runs will take place from noon to 2 p.m. There is a 1,500-foot track, and the fee is $5 to participate.

• “Frozen” fun with District 241’s Early Child Family Education and school readiness programs will be from noon to 2 p.m. Activities are geared for children ages 2 to 5. Elsa and Anna from “Frozen” will be in attendance.

• A chili cookoff hosted by the Freeborn County Jaycees will start at 12:30 p.m. Cost to enter the cookoff is $10. There is a limit of 15 entries.

Cost to sample is $5 per spoon or $4 if you bring a nonperishable food item. Cost for children 12 and under is $3. There will be cash and prizes for winners.

• Geocaching bingo will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sign in at the Edgewater pavilion.

• Horse-drawn wagon rides will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. starting at the pavilion. Bring a nonperishable food item for a ride.

• The Blue Ice Plunge will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the Salvation Army and Ecumenical Food Pantry. Recognition will be given after the event for most food donated, and participants will get a medallion.

• The Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Department will have a children’s carnival at the Edgewater Bay pavilion from 2 to 4 p.m. with face painting, games and crafts.

Friday

• The B and C Squirt Hockey Tournament will be at Albert Lea City Arena.

• The All-Member Art Show will be open to view from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• The “Going Places” art exhibit will be available to view from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

 

Saturday

• The B and C Squirt Hockey Tournament will be at Albert Lea City Arena.

• A Shinefest Breakfast will be from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 301 W. Clark St. Menu includes Denny Brue pancakes, eggs, sausages, juice, milk and coffee. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children 5 to 12 and free for children under 5.

• Ruby’s Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to noon at Assembly of God Church, 1540 S. Shore Drive

Sunday, Feb. 7

• The 26th annual Tiger City Farm, Toy, Truck and Collectible Show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

• The All-Member Art Show will be open to view from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• The “Going Places” art exhibit will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

• The Kiester Firefighter’s Relief Association will host a fish fry from 5 to 7 p.m. or until gone at the Kiester fire station. Menu includes Alaskan walleye, cole slaw, baked potato, garlic toast, bars and beverages. Cost is $12. Children 10 and under can eat for $6. Proceeds will go toward a new equipment purchase.

• The Fully Rely on God Valentine’s party will be from 6 to 9 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church.

 

Sunday

• The B and C Squirt Hockey Tournament will be at Albert Lea City Arena.

• American Legion Post 56 will host a post breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, potatoes and scrambled eggs with or without ham, juice and coffee. Cost is $7.50 per person.

• Alden American Legion Post 404 will host a post breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon. Menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage links, milk, juice and coffee. Cost is $5. Children under age 6 are free.

• The Tiger City Farm, Toy, Truck and Collectible Show will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.
