50 years ago: 1966

In the opening round of the Region 2 hockey tournament, Albert Lea High School defeated Simley in sudden death overtime 3-2. Doyle Freemyer scored the winning goal 16 seconds into overtime. Rick Swanson and Chris Durgin also scored for the Tigers.

The Ellendale High School basketball team defeated Morristown 70-59 and improved to 8-2 in the Gopher Conference. Darryl Paulson scored 17 points and Garian Bergdale 13 for the Raiders.

Emmons High School defeated Alden 72-67 in a Border League basketball game. The Eagles were led by John Lair with 24 points, Lynn Yost 19 and Galen Schewe 13. Alan Lindeman scored 27 points and Ron Peterson 20 for A-C.

 

25  years ago: 1991

ALHS finished in second place in the Big Nine Conference boys’ swimming and diving meet. First-place finishes for the Tigers were Chad Bergo in the 200-yard individual medley, Chris Schmitz in the 100 freestyle and the team of Erik Hendrickson, Nate Olson, Bergo and Schmitz in the 200 freestyle relay.

The ALHS wrestling team won the Big Nine Conference title with an 8-0 record after defeating Mankato West 33-17. Winning matches with pins for the Tigers were David Mendenhall at 152 pounds and Rick Kruse at 189.

The ALHS girls’ basketball team evened its season record at 9-9 after defeating Mankato West 63-38. Lori Coughlin scored 16 points, Pam Stoltz 12 and Kim Otterson 11 for the Tigers.

 

10 years ago: 2006

Laura Hillman scored five points in an 8-2 win for the ALHS girls over Mankato East. Hillman scored 355 points in her career and was 14th on the Minnesota All-Time List.

The ALHS wrestling team finished the regular Big Nine Conference with a 9-0 mark and won the title for the 22nd time after defeating Rochester Mayo 68-0. Winning by falls for the Tigers were Logan Kortan at 112, Zach McGinnes at 135, Matt Vietze at 189 and Mike Honeycuff at 215.
