Minneapolis planners reject Vikings bid to rename street

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Planning Commission has rejected the Minnesota Vikings’ attempt to rename part of the street near their new stadium “Vikings Way.”

Commissioners who opposed the change Monday said the proposal did not appear to meet city guidelines for street renaming.

City Council member Lisa Bender, a member of the commission, says her understanding of the policy is that city officials don’t want private businesses to change the names of streets in front of their businesses.

The Vikings want to change part of Chicago Avenue to “Vikings Way.” The NFL team points out that a street was renamed Twins Way beside the Minnesota Twins’ home at Target Field.

The Minneapolis City Council likely will have the final say.
