50 years ago: 1966

In the finals of the Minnesota state gymnastic meet, Albert Lea High School defeated Fairmont 68.5 to 57.5. Roger Neist placed first in all-around, parallel bars and horizontal bar for the Tigers. Doug Peak placed first on the horse for the Tigers.

Blooming Prairie defeated Northfield 81-53 in the first round of Region 1 basketball by a score of 81-53. Jim Turner scored 21 points and Bob Tonolli 19 for the winners. B.P. won the Region 1 title by defeating Red Wing 59-54 and advanced to the Minnesota state basketball tournament. B.P. was led by Steve Fritz with 20 points, Turner 13 and Keith Invalson with 11.

25 years ago: 1991

Top shooters for the 1990-91 Brotherhood Dartball League were the following: First, Dean Sorenson, Alden; second, Rick Walther, Lunder-Round Prairie; third, Darrel Soper, Lunder-Round Prairie; fourth, Don Bergan, Salem -Lake Mills; fifth, Paul Yost, Emmons; sixth, Carlton Wittmer, Pickeral Lake; seventh, Ted Yost, Mansfield; eighth, Karlyle Nelson, Scarville; ninth, Don Masters, Mansfield; and 10th, Bruce Stolass, Glenville.

Brian Moretz of Northwood-Kensett, three-time Iowa state wrestling champion, two-time All-State football player and state champion shot putter said he would attend the University of Northern Iowa.

Named to the 1990-91 Big Nine All-Conference Hockey Team from ALHS were Travis Olson, Chad Cliff and Brett Adams. Named Honorable Mention were Scott Diggins and Todd Intihar.

 

10 years ago: 2006

The ALHS boys’ basketball team defeated Winona 61-58 in Section 1AAA and advanced to the Section title game. Corey Dieser scored 18 points for the Tigers.

In the first game at the Iowa state basketball tournament, N-K handed North Mahaska its first loss of the year when it defeated the defending state champion 61-58. Preston Davidson scored 26 points for the Vikings.

NRHEG defeated Kenyon-Wanamingo 43-39 and won the sub-section title. The Panthers were led by Ben Waldhauser with 12 points.
