50 years ago: 1966

The Moose No. 3 team won the Albert Lea City Men’s bowling tournament with a 3,092 score to second-place 3,082 by the Mastercraft team. Members of the Moose No. 3 team were Pete Holtan, Dick Webber, Gordy West, Howard Brua and Mike Reimacher. The singles event was won by Del Marquardt.

In the first round of sub-district basketball Alden High School defeated Emmons 66-51 behind 22 points by Alan Lindeman and Ron Peterson with 16. Gaylen Schewe led the Eagles with 14 points. Daryl Paulson scored 15 points in the second game for Ellendale in its 65-50 win over Glenville. In the second round Duane Nelson, with 25 points, led Ellendale to a 74-66 win over Alden. Blooming Prairie defeated Freeborn 74-56 in the second game. Steve Fritz scored 21 points for Blooming Prairie.

25 years ago: 1991

Wells-Easton senior Josh Heckman at 125 pounds defeated defending state champion Jeremy Levine of Foley 6-3 to win the 125-pound title in the Minnesota state wrestling tournament.

The Albert Lea High School girls’ basketball season ended after losing to Burnsville 45-41 in the quarterfinal round of Region 1AA playoffs. Pam Stoltz scored 12 points for Albert Lea.

Scott Ellertson of Albert Lea won the Red Earth Loppet in Marquette, Michigan, over 500 racers in the 42-kilometer cross- country ski race.

In the semifinal round of Class 2A district basketball, Southland defeated Alden-Conger-Freeborn 78-71. The Knights were led by Kirk Petersen and Aaron Phillips with 16 points.

 

10 years ago: 2006

In the first round in Class AAA, the ALHS wrestling team defeated Hastings 29-23. Winners for the Tigers were Eric Johnson, 119; Isaac Johnson, 125; Beau Hansen, 130; Matt Morris, 145; Nate Goodnature, 160; Alex Paul, 189; Mike Honeycutt, 215; and Ben Berhow, 275. The Tigers defeated Centennial 59-9 and then lost to Apple Valley 35-22 to finish in second place.

In the first round of section girls’ basketball, Albert Lea defeated Winona 68-59. Hali Hendrickson and Elizabeth each scored 14 points for the Tigers.
