Weekend Planner: Love story to air from The Met to Albert Lea

Published 9:45 am Thursday, March 3, 2016

A passionate love story will air live from The Metropolitan Opera in New York City on Saturday to the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

Giacomo Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” stars Kristine Opolais and Roberto Alagna as the main characters, Manon Lescaut and Chevalier des Grieux.

While the Met planned this production to feature Opolais’s interpretation of the title role, Alagna had just a few weeks to learn the staging and prepare a role he had never sung, when the scheduled singer withdrew because of illness, according to a press release.

The opera opened Feb. 21 with rave reviews of the “most handsomely executed performance of this opera,” the release stated.

The opera will air at 11:55 a.m., with a brief Meet the Met at 11:30 a.m. in the theater for people to find out more about the opera, composer and synopsis.

Tickets may be purchased at the box office of the theater an hour before the opera. Adult tickets are $20, and student tickets are $12. Limited free student tickets with a school ID are available.
