Weekend Planner: Scouting for Food event slated for this weekend

Published 9:35 am Thursday, March 17, 2016

Boy Scouts will go door to door on Saturday collecting food for area food shelves.

As part of the annual Scouting for Food event, people are asked to leave nonperishable food items for the Salvation Army and Ecumenical Food Pantry outside by 9 a.m.

The Scouts last year collected 4,200 pounds of food, and this year they hope to reach 4,500 pounds.

Collection bags were distributed in the Freeborn County Shopper earlier this week.

“I am extremely thankful for the Scouts’ hard work and to all of those that support our pantry,” said Salvation Army Maj. Elsie Cline in a news release.

Last year, The Salvation Army distributed over 221,809 pounds of food to Freeborn County residents in need.

Scouting for Food began across the nation in the 1980s, when Scouts collected an estimated 65 million cans of nonperishable food. It has since grown into an annual event.
