Albert Lea defeated Mankato West 10 yrs. ago

50 years ago: 1966

Coach Neil Pierce of the Alden High School baseball team was expecting a rebuilding season with only five returning letter winners. Returning were Greg Smith at shortstop, Al Lindeman at pitcher, Mike Nelson at second base, Ron Peterson at catcher and Gayle Johnson at pitcher and outfield.

The Albert Lea High School golf team opened its season with a 166-188 win over Lake Mills. Scores for the Tigers were Floyd Harves (39), Bob Oothoudt (40), Don Nolander (43) and Steve Gordan (44).

Roger Neist of the ALHS gymnastic team received the Warpeha Memorial Award for Outstanding Minnesota High School Gymnast.

Dick Wayne threw a one-hitter for the ALHS baseball team in its 6-2 victory over Fairmont. John Morley had two hits for the Tigers.

 

25 years ago: 1991

Glenville-Emmons opened its baseball season with a 13-1 win over Medford. Ryan Rasmussen started things for the Wolverines with a grand-slam home run in the first inning. Doug Yost and Tracy Monson each had two hits for G-E.

Coach Doug Christopherson greeted five returning letter winners for the ALHS girls’ golf team. They were Lisa Christopherson, Kari Haanstad, Leah Mattson, Traci Emerson and Jodi Mack.

The ALHS boys’ tennis team was defeated by Fairmont 5-2. Winning matches for the Tigers were Dean Hanson at No. 2  singles and Mike Hench and Niki Spurr at No. 3 doubles.

 

10 years ago: 2006

The ALHS baseball team raised its season record to 3-0 and its Big Nine Conference record to 2-0 after defeating Mankato West 10-9. Arik Matson had three hits and Ben Berhow homered for the Tigers.

In a girls triangular golf match, United South Central won with a score of 212 to Blooming Prairie with 276 and Alden-Conger with 324. USC scores were Cassie Wood (47), Tiffany Adams (52), Jessica Stensrud (53) and Kelsey Treptow (64)

The G-E softball team defeated Granada-Huntley-East Chain 21-2. Jordan Claussen and Ashley Lau both had three hits.
