A shared user trail and possible intersection revisions on East Main Street are possible in the next five years.

The Albert Lea City Council Monday authorized staff to apply for federal surface transportation funds for fiscal year 2022 via the Minnesota Department of Transportation for the proposed project, which would include a shared user trail and possible intersection revisions for East Main Street from U.S. Highway 65 to Freeborn County Road 38.

As of last week, designs and a cost estimate for the project had not been formed.

Albert Lea City Engineer Steven Jahnke said Monday morning he is unsure how much the city will request for the project. That is expected to be decided by the time the application is sent next month.

If the city does not receive federal funding this year, Jahnke said officials will have to decide whether they want to re-apply in 2019.

Funds from state and local resources are also expected for the project, which is not expected to begin until 2022.

In other action, the council:

Authorized the release of a development agreement between the city and Wedgewood Cove Townhomes LLC. after the the transfer of Wedgewood Cove Townhomes from Schrom Construction to Nicollet Business Center LLC.

Authorized two township agreements for fire protection services from Albert Lea Fire Department. The agreement means the city will receive more than $14,500 from Albert Lea Township and $2,440 from Pickerel Lake Township for the services.
